About The Founder…
Derek Furesz is an experienced child care professional and avid nerdy gamer. He’s been working in licensed child care programs for over 15 years, with focus on special needs inclusion, supervision, sensory needs, and group games.
Derek has worked at Britannia Out of School Care, Jericho Kids Club, and Vancouver Society of Child Care Centers, plus several other childcare programs. He also has a diploma from the Douglas College Child and Youth Care Counsellor program. His child first aid certificate is up to date. His criminal record check is clean and up to date. And he and many hours of workshops and certificates in child care.
He has a personal interest in games, and enjoys sharing them with kids. He plays Magic: the Gathering regularly, board games occasionally, and he used to play a lot of D&D. He keeps his knowledge of these updated, and nurtures his connections in some of these communities. He combines his experience in both gaming and childcare to adapt the games to be appropriate for each age and developmental stage.
“I specialize in person-centred care, relationship building, and engagement.”
I have run card games, board games, and Dungeons and Dragons in these settings many times and with great success. I work mainly with children ages, 5-12, and some experience with teens. I specialize in person-centred care, relationship building, and engagement. I build strong connections with every kid I work with, using conversation, humour, boundaries, emotional awareness, and above all else, listening.
About the Programs
We provide flexible programming, doing our best to make our services accessible to many people and programs. This includes meeting locations, hours, and adaptive programming. If there is a group of kids willing to play, we will do our best to find a way.
Our programs are designed based on the age, development, and interest of each group.
Each child’s needs are considered, the program structure and game play are adapted. Each group is generally based on location, the school or after school program they attend, the neighbourhood, or friend group.
We offer to home school kids as well, but transportation is a consideration. Most programs run in the school right as the kids finish their day, making transportation easier. Arrangements are flexible and we hope to negotiate ways to include all interested kids.
